SAG Awards 2024 Date and Time: February 24, 2024 at 8 pm ET

The 30th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards Ceremony (SAG Awards 2024), honoring the best achievements in film and television performances for the year 2023, was held on Saturday night (February 24, 2024), at the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall in Los Angeles, California. The award show streamed live all over the world on Netflix. This streaming remained free from all commercials (No bleeps and no ad breaks) for the first time for both the show and the streamer – yes, the SAG Awards show freed it up to be different from other award ceremony nights.

SAG Awards 2024 Host

Although the organizers didn’t select anybody as SAG Awards 2024 host, Idris Elba unofficially fulfilled those duties, both at the time of opening and closing of the show and appearing once in the middle of the show. Everytime he appeared on the stage the crowd started laughing.

Other celebrity entertainers of the Award Night who took the stage as presenters included  Billie Eilish, Jessica Chastain, America Ferrera, Robert Downey Jr. and SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher, among many others.

Legendary actress Barbra Streisand received the SAG Life Achievement award while Jennifer Aniston presented her the award, hailing the legend for ‘that voice’ and calling her ‘a mensch’. Bradley Cooper also took the stage as a part of tribute.

In her acceptance speech, Streisand recalled that she had been a member of SAG-AFTRA for more than 60 years. She was a teenage girl in Brooklyn who used to dream of becoming an actress while reading a movie magazine and eating a “pint of coffee ice cream.” She reminisced about key players of old Hollywood who were Jewish. She recalled that they fled from eastern Europe to escape persecution, saying, “Now I dream of a world where such prejudice is a thing of the past.”

Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt, the stars of the 2006 film ‘The Devil Wears Prada’, reunited on Saturday night to present the first award of the night together. It was really a magic moment to the fans of the 2006 movie. The SAG stage also gave us an opportunity to see other casts from previous films reuniting on Saturday night, including those from ‘Breaking Bad’ and from the 1986’s David Cronenberg film ‘The Fly’. They helped in presenting the final award for the evening.

‘Oppenheimer’ continued to overpower Hollywood’s award seasons as usual. On Saturday night it grabbed trophies in three categories out of four. It was awarded for “Male actor in Leading role” (Cillian Murphy), for “Male actor in a Supporting role” (Robert Downey Jr.) and for “Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture”. As the Oscar Awards draw closer, Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster biopic has increasingly looked like the hot favorite. The SAG Awards being considered as one of the best Oscar predictors, will only add to the momentum for ‘Oppenheimer’, the front-runner Academy Awards nominee with 13 nods.

The cast of “Succession” led the nominations among the television categories with five nods – grabbing the top honor for best ensemble. Like “Oppenheimer”, “Barbie” also won four nominations in the motion picture categories, alongside earning recognition in the coveted ensemble cast category. “Oppenheimer” stole the show claiming three of those awards while “Barbie” was shut out.

The TV awards went largely to the same shows that have claimed awards at the Emmys and Golden Globes: “The Bear” (best comedy series ensemble, Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri ); “Beef” (Ali Wong, Steven Yeun); and the cast of “Succession.” We found only Pedro Pascal as an exception. He grabbed best male actor in a drama series for “The Last of Us” defeating a trio of “Succession” stars.

The most thrilling win for the night went to Lily Gladstone for ‘female actor in the leading role’ in Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon.” No category had been more hotly contested as the analysts were evenly split between Gladstone and Emma Stone for “Poor Things”. Gladstone ultimately emerged victorious but Emma Stone was also applauded.

“We bring empathy into a world that so much needs it,” said Gladstone. “It’s so easy to distance ourselves. It’s so easy to close off, to stop feeling. And we all bravely keep feeling. And that humanizes people. That brings people out of the shadows. It brings visibility.”

A neck-and-neck contest was also seen between Murphy and Paul Giamatti (“The Holdovers”). But Murphy has the clear edge of heading into the ‘Academy Awards’ as he emerged victorious at the SAGs, the BAFTAs and Globes.

Likewise Downey Jr. and Da’Vine Joy Randolph each became favorites for Oscar as they won SAGs for their supporting performances. Randolph’s performance in “The Holdovers” turned out to be a breakthrough role for her. The 37-year-old actor is now a strong contender for an Oscar Award, too.

“To every actor out there still waiting in the wings for their chance, let me tell you: Your life can change in a day,” Randolph said. “It’s not a question of if but when. Keep going.”

Unlike the other major award shows, the SAG Awards also reward best stunt performances. “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” won the ‘Outstanding Action Performance’ award for motion picture segment and “The Last of Us” won the same for television series.

This year’s SAG Awards followed an exhausting months-long strike in which the SAG-AFTRA union fought a tough battle over a number of issues. The union that represents 120000 performer-members, including A-list stars extracted hard-fought gains from studios like Disney and Netflix in last year’s work stoppage.

“It is especially meaningful to be here with us all together for this occasion, after going through a very difficult time with the strike,” Idris Elba said as he opened the gala.

“Your solidarity ignited workers around the world, triggering what will forever be remembered as ‘the hot labor summer,’” said Fran Drescher, president of SAG-AFTRA. “This was a seminal moment in our union’s history.”
