Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ swept the award ceremony once again, following its superb performance at both the ‘Golden Globe Awards’ and the ‘Critics’ Choice Movie Awards’ – this time at the 2024 Bafta Film Awards grabbing seven awards including Best film, Director and Leading actor categories. Nolan’s epic biographical thriller entered the Bafta race with a total of thirteen nominations and ended up winning trophies in technical categories such as Editing and Cinematography, too.
After winning his first-ever Bafta, Nolan thanked studio Universal, “for letting us take on something dark, and seeing the potential for that” in his acceptance speech.
‘Poor Things’ was another film on the ceremony night with a distinguished success that won five trophies including Emma Stone’s award for lead actress.
Jonathan Glazer’s Holocaust drama ‘The Zone of Interest’ received the prestigious award for three categories – Outstanding British film, best film not in the English language and Sound. On the other hand, ‘Barbie’, ‘Saltburn’, ‘Maestro’ and the Martin Scorsese movie ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ left empty-handed.
“British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA)” chairperson Sarah Putt opened the ceremony on Sunday night at the Royal Festival Hall in London. She welcomed the celebrity audience including the BAFTA President Prince William. William, however, appeared without his wife Catherine, Princess of Wales, who continues recuperating at home following an operation. Besides this, his father King Charles III was diagnosed as cancer-affected last month. These all might explain why he didn’t give a speech. In her speech, Putt said she was sending Catherine and the King “Our very best wishes” before handing over to the night’s host David Tennant who starred in ‘Doctor Who’.
The ceremony night was star-studded by the appearance of some movie-legends like Tom Cruise (via video link) and Michael J. Fox, who presented the best film category.

We are left with only the ‘Screen Actors Guild Awards’ (to air on Netflix on February 24) as a major award event ahead of the Oscar Awards ceremony on March 10.
The Bafta ceremony didn’t air live. It was broadcast on BBC One in the UK and was available to stream on BBC iPlayer and BritBox in North America.
