Nominations for 96th Annual Academy Awards were announced on Tuesday, 23rd January, 2024 at the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre in Beverly Hills, California. As expected, the Christopher Nolan film ‘Oppenheimer’ topped the list of the contenders with 13 nominations followed closely by the fantasy film “Poor Things” with 11 and the Martin Scorsese drama “Killers of the Flower Moon” with 10 nominations. The summer blockbuster “Barbie” has earned 8 nominations, too.

The 96th Oscar Awards have followed a year that saw the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon of “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan’s epic biopic pack the theaters all around the world with each digging through hundreds of millions of dollars in the box office.

There was no dearth of surprising elements also in Tuesday’s announcement. Greta Gerwig was not nominated for the “Best Director” category for “Barbie”. Actress Margot Robbie didn’t get a nomination for acting but “Barbie”, produced by Robbie, was nominated in the best film category. Leonardo DeCaprio, who was a former Oscar winner, didn’t receive an acting nomination this year for his movie “Killers of the Flower Moon”.

In the meantime, Lily Gladstone, DeCaprio’s co-star in the movie “Killers of the Flower Moon ”, received a nomination for the best actress category. She became the first Native American who received a nomination in this category. America Ferrera was nominated as best supporting actress for her performance in “Barbie” while she failed to receive a nomination for Golden Globe Award this year.
