Anne Hathaway stars in Prime Video’s upcoming film “The Idea of You,” where she plays a 40-year-old single mother experiencing a whirlwind romance with a 24-year-old lead singer of a popular boy band, portrayed by Nicholas Galitzine. The R-rated movie The Idea of You release date on Prime Video is set to 2nd May, 2024.
Released by the streamer on Wednesday, the two-minute thirty-two-second-long The Idea of You trailer begins with Hathaway’s Solène and Galitzine’s Hayes, recalling their first encounter at a Coachella festival where Hayes’ band, August Moon, was performing.
Following their backstage encounter at Coachella, the couple begins a passionate relationship. Hayes serenades Solène on the piano, gently touching her thigh. Despite Solène’s hesitation, Hayes reassures her with a kiss, insisting, “No you’re not” when she mentions their age difference.
As sparks ignite between them, they embark on a serious relationship. The couple is seen navigating paparazzi while embarking on romantic outings, causing Hathaway’s character to ask, “What about what people will say?” — to which Galitzine responds, “I don’t care what they say.” However, when their romance becomes public, it incites significant criticism, causing Solène to question why her happiness is met with such negativity from others.
Adapted from Robinne Lee’s bestselling novel of the same name, the movie’s storyline begins with Solène’s husband, portrayed by Reid Scott, deciding to end their marriage. This results in him canceling their planned Coachella trip with their 16-year-old daughter, Izzy (played by Ella Rubin). At the festival, Solène encounters Hayes Campbell, the lead singer of the famous band August Moon, rumored to be inspired by Harry Styles. As an unforeseen romance blossoms between them, Solène faces the challenge of juggling her career, her responsibilities as a mother to her teenage daughter, and the constant media attention surrounding her relationship.
During a 2020 interview with Vogue, Lee was questioned about whether the novel drew inspiration from Styles, to which she replied, “Inspired is a strong word.” However, Lee mentioned that “the seed was planted” after researching One Direction in 2017 and learning about Styles’ tendency to date older women. She also observed how scenes she had written mirrored events in Styles’ life. For example, shortly after depicting a scene where Soléne and Hayes are caught by paparazzi in a compromising situation on a yacht, similar photos of Styles and Kendall Jenner surfaced.
The movie is directed by Michael Showalter and written by Jennifer Westfeldt, who will also serve as executive producer. The production team includes Cathy Schulman from Welle Entertainment, Gabrielle Union from I’ll Have Another, Anne Hathaway from Somewhere Pictures, Robinne Lee, Eric Hayes, Michael Showalter, and Jordana Mollick as producers. Kian Gass from I’ll Have Another will also be an executive producer.
Other actors in The Idea of You cast include Annie Mumolo, Perry Mattfeld, and Jordan Aaron Hall. The roles of the other members of August Moon are played by Jaiden Anthony, Raymond Cham, Vik White, and Dakota Adan.
The movie features several Oscar winners in its cast and crew. Anne Hathaway won an Oscar for her role as Fantine in “Les Misérables” in 2013. Annie Mumolo earned her Oscar for co-writing “Bridesmaids,” while Cathy Schulman won for producing the best picture winner “Crash.”
